Sleepiness

I'm on my way to work this morning, and i hear an advertisement for a drug called "NuVigil".

This drug is supposed to help those people who work night or swing shifts combat sleepiness while on the job.  I dont know about you, but that sounds an awful lot like speed.

The commercial is about 1 minute long. The first 15 seconds is describing what it does..keeping in mind that it doesn't explain "shift syndrome".  The next 45 seconds are listing off the side effects beginning with the most dangerous, to the not so dangerous. Take a look...

  • fever, sore throat, headache, and vomiting with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash;

  • bruising, severe tingling, numbness, pain, muscle weakness;

  • easy bruising or bleeding;

  • white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips;

  • hallucinations, unusual thoughts or behavior;

  • depression, anxiety; or

  • chest pain, uneven heart beats.

  • They point out, that the red skin rash is really dangerous, pretty common, and go seek medical assistance if you get one.

    Really?

    Ok so here are the "common" side effects, which means most people will probably suffer one or all of these at some point in taking this drug...

  • headache, dizziness;

  • feeling nervous or agitated;

  • nausea, diarrhea;

  • trouble sleeping (insomnia); or

  • dry mouth.

  • INSOMNIA? Really???  well look at this list. It looks like all the symptoms suffered by a meth user.

    By the end of the commercial spot, and I'm wondering why anyone would risk all, or even ONE of the above, to not be sleepy at work.  That red rash alone would make me just diss the drug and eat about 3 more cups of coffee.

    What gets me more, is that there were studies done, where some drug company, convinced a governing board, that all of the above, was MUCh better than taking a few zzzz on the job.  I guess if you have to handle very big machinery and lives are at stake, and you wanna be a team player, but it sounds like a lot of zombies will erupt from this mess.

    Just sayin...
