FInishing up Week 2 of Explainer Bootcamp beta
When i'm given a script, and I have to break it down and make a shot list for live action ( as opposed to animation), i can 'see' in my minds eye exactly how it goes and what the shots will look like. But with animation, pulling that idea how of my brain onto hand drawn illustrations is a lot tougher for me.
I was surprised to find my TA's notes on my boards, that they were albeit rudimentary, communicated the idea clearly. These are the boards that I was going to toss in the trash and start over. Remember old Dutch? (That ugly voice in my head that says i'm doing it all wrong) He had plenty say about them. My instructor asked me to submit them, even if they were incorrect.
When i spoke to a dear friend lately about my theories of the Dutch Uncle and how i fall down rabbit holes, he concurred with stories of a friend of his who does the same thing. Only she gives up after getting frustrated. Been there. The good thing about deadlines, is that it doesn't allow me to give up.
I worked all weekend on my boards, reinking them and making them reflect the new treatment i wrote out friday night. Oh the new treatment. Well, suddenly, the cinematic writing started to make sense. And out of the many revisions, a concept became clear. Thinking i'd laid it on thick, the TA wrote me back that it was dead on.
Today, the instructor himself sent me an instant message. He told me my boards communicated the ideas as needed and were polished enough to send to a client. In my world, that's a checkmark.
I guess the moral of this story is, find those you trust to look at your work, so you don't fall into a silo alone and fret yourself into paralysis.
Next steps of the project...creating the animatic.
Clear skies!
